Code Orange alert Thursday for Birmingham area
Another Code Orange air quality alert will be in effect on Thursday in Jefferson and Shelby counties.
The Alabama Department of Environmental Management issued the alert because ground-level concentrations of ozone are expected to be high enough to pose a risk to those with respiratory conditions and children.
The general public is not expected to be affected.
Temperatures are expected to climb well into the 90s and possibly hit 100 degrees on Thursday in the Birmingham metro area with light winds, which will hurt air quality.
A heat advisory will be in effect on Thursday from 11 a.m. until Friday at 8 p.m. for both Jefferson and Shelby counties, according to the National Weather Service.
Temperatures could be even hotter on Friday, and an excessive heat warning will be in effect for Jefferson and Shelby counties along with other areas in Alabama.
