Code Orange alert for Birmingham area on Tuesday

A Code Orange air quality alert will be in effect on Tuesday for Jefferson and Shelby counties.

The Alabama Department of Environmental Management issued the alert because ozone levels on Tuesday are expected to rise high enough to affect those with respiratory conditions. Children can also be at risk.

According to a forecast from Airnow.gov an area of high pressure — which is responsible for Alabama’s high temperatures of late — will remain in control of the weather on Tuesday. Slightly drier air is expected to be in place and winds will be light.

High temperatures in the Birmingham area on Tuesday are expected to rise into the upper 90s. That could cause ground-level ozone concentrations to reach unhealthy levels for those sensitive groups.

The general public is not expected to be affected.

Some recommendations for air quality alert days from ADEM:

* Conserve electricity and set your air conditioner at a higher temperature.

* Limit driving and combine errands.

* Avoid use of gas-powered lawn and garden equipment.

* Refuel vehicles after 6 p.m.

* Limit engine idling.

* Use household, workshop, and garden chemicals in ways that keep evaporation to a minimum, or try to avoid them when poor air quality is forecast.

* If breathing becomes difficult, move indoors.
