Code Orange air alert Wednesday for Birmingham metro

There will be a Code Orange air quality alert in place on Wednesday for Jefferson and Shelby counties.

The ground-level concentrations of ozone in the air could cause some issues for sensitive groups such as children or those with asthma or other respiratory conditions, according to the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.

The rest of the general public is not expected to be affected.

Hot temperatures along with light winds are expected to contribute to Wednesday’s air quality situation. Highs are expected to be in the mid- to upper 90s across the state.

Some tips for air quality alert days:

* Conserve electricity

* Limit driving

* Avoid use of gasoline power lawn and garden equipment.

* Refuel cars and trucks after 6 p.m.

* Limit engine idling.

More dangerously hot temperatures will be possible across Alabama on Thursday through Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
