Coastal Player of the Week for playoff Round 1 starred on defense
The Week 12 Cunningham Bounds Player of the Week shined on defense to help his team record a shutout to open the Alabama High School Athletic Association football playoffs last week.
Vigor sophomore cornerback Miguel Wilson took the top spot in the Player of the Week poll with 7,359 votes – 29 percent of the 25,485 total.
In a 46-0 rout of Sipsey Valley, Wilson picked off a pair of passes and returned one for a touchdown for the Wolves.
Vigor (10-1) bounced back from a 10-9 regular-season finale loss to 7A Baker with the rout in the Class 5A playoffs. The Wolves will travel to 6-5 Eufaula for their second-round match up.
St. Michael running back Noah Moss was second in the survey with 5,278 votes, 21 percent of the total. The junior ran for 213 yards, had 90 yards receiving and scored six touchdowns in a 63-40 win over Handley. The fifth-ranked Cardinals (10-1) will travel to No. 2 Pleasant Grove (9-1) for a second-round showdown.
Baker’s Jawon Springs was third in the balloting with 4,372 votes, 17 percent. The senior had an interception and scored a touchdown in the first overtime of a double-OT 17-14 win over Hewitt-Trussville. The win was the Hornets’ first in the playoffs in 40 years. Baker travels to Enterprise in the second round of the 7A playoffs on Friday.
