Coach Prime to Cowboys? Jerry Jones, Deion Sanders talking
Cornerback Deion Sanders helped the Dallas Cowboys win Super Bowl XXX. The Cowboys haven’t been back to the NFL championship game since.
Could Sanders get Dallas back to the Super Bowl in a new role – as Coach Prime?
Mike McCarthy’s contract as the Cowboys’ coach reached its end on Monday, and after five seasons at the helm with a 49-35 regular-season record and a 1-3 playoff mark, he won’t be back in 2025.
Team owner Jerry Jones’ list of coach candidates apparently includes Sanders. FOX Sports, CBS Sports and ESPN reported on Monday that Jones and Sanders had talked about the vacancy.
A member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Sanders has five seasons of experience as a college head coach. He led Jackson State to a 27-6 record in three seasons, then went 13-12 over the past two seasons at Colorado.
Sanders said this month that he’d leave for the NFL only for the opportunity to continue to coach his sons, Shedeur Sanders and Shilo Sanders.
Shedeur Sanders is considered one of the top quarterbacks available in the 2025 NFL Draft. Shilo Sanders is considered a marginal prospect at defensive back.
The Cowboys’ first pick in the 2025 NFL Draft will come at No. 12.
