Clinic in south Alabama shuts down, citing rising costs and doctor shortages

The Alabama Orthopaedic Clinic in Mobile will close its doors in April, impacting over 150 employees.

The south Alabama clinic, which has been open for nearly 30 years, said the decision to close “results from unfortunate timing and circumstance.” The clinic also said it’s been hard to recruit new physicians to the practice.

“Rising costs and decreasing providers in the group have presented a major challenge to the group’s sustainability despite having great patient volume,” the clinic said in a news release. “With doctor shortages, higher cost in doing business and reimbursement cuts, many surgical and non-surgical specialties alike are feeling the pressure,”

It is still undecided what will happen to the 153 employees of the clinic. According to the release, “our surgeons are still planning to offer their services to patients as they find new groups in the area.”

The clinic is continuing to see patients and perform surgeries until it closes on April 11.

“As our doctors decide on their own next steps, we will be as effective and efficient as possible in communicating with patients to ensure the best continuity of care,” the release said.
