Cleaning up Memorial Parkway: No ‘strip clubs’ or ‘junkyards’ allowed

Huntsville city planners are continuing their efforts to “clean up” Memorial Parkway.

The Huntsville Planning Commission passed a zoning change Tuesday that would keep undesirable businesses off a 104.6-acre site on both sides of the Parkway north of Industrial Drive.

Under the current zoning of light industry, commission member Sally Warden said strip clubs and junkyards could in theory open in the area.

“We’re talking a full gamut of retail sales and services currently permitted,” added city planner Lady Kassama.

Those businesses would not be permitted under the zoning passed by the commission for highway business and neighborhood business districts.

The zoning change must be approved by the Huntsville City Council before going into effect. A vote on the change is expected to occur before the council in May.
