Clay-Chalkville, Thompson will play on ESPN2
A pair of Birmingham-area football powers will meet in a national TV game this fall.
Class 6A power Clay-Chalkville and four-time reigning Class 7A champ Thompson will meet on Thursday, Sept. 28 in a game to be televised on ESPN2.
The game will be a Thompson home game in Alabaster.
Mark Freeman’s Warriors went 11-3 in 2022 and defeated Auburn 49-24 in the Class 7A championship game. The regular season included a 17-14 win over Drew Gilmer’s Cougars.
Clay-Chalkville went 8-2 a year ago, including an upset loss to Parker (7-6) in the first round of the playoffs. The Cougars went 15-0 and won the 6A title in 2021.
Both teams annually have top recruits.
That is once again the case this fall.
The Cougars’ roster includes Alabama commit Jaylen Mbakwe (No. 2 in the 247 composite rankings for the Class of 2024), offensive tackle JacQawn McRoy (No. 11), wide receiver Mario Craver (No. 15), linebacker D’Angelo Barber (No. 25) and quarterback Kamari McClellan (No. 36).
The Thompson roster includes senior safety Kaleb Harris (No. 31), junior Southern Cal defensive back commit Anquon Fegans (No. 5) and freshman quarterback Trent Seaborn, who recently received offers from Auburn and Alabama.
