Class 7A girls soccer: Sparkman downs Auburn for 1st title
Jayda Davis scored two goals Saturday as fifth-ranked Sparkman captured the school’s first Class 7A girls soccer title with a 2-1 win over Auburn at John Hunt Park in Huntsville.
It was the first time a Madison County school had reached the semifinal or final.
“The team’s got a lot of heart. They’re battle tested,” Sparkman second-year coach Sam Tidmore said. “And we play for each other, play for our community.”
Davis, a junior, was named the game’s most valuable player. In her third year with the Senators (21-4), she finished with 29 goals.
“Honestly, it was just my teammates passing me the ball, trusting me with it,” Davis said. “And finishing the opportunities that I was given.”
She scored in the 12th minute for Sparkman’s 1-0 halftime lead. Sparkman goalkeeper Audrey Edwards made three saves in the half while Auburn’s Ragan Ellis had four. Edwards finished with eight saves, and Ellis had seven.
Auburn’s Samantha Reitz evened the score in the 52nd minute. She tapped the ball in after a rebound off the post.
Davis scored the game winner in the 56th minute on a penalty kick.
“This is like taking a knee in football,” Tidmore quipped with just over two minutes left.
Seventh-ranked Auburn finished at 16-6.
“We got scored on early. We had some nerves going, but I think we settled in, played nicely,” Tigers fourth-year coach Bill Ferguson said. “I’m very proud of our girls. Very proud. They represented our school and their families well.”
