Class 6A, Region 1 football program making a change at head coach
Robertsdale head football coach Kyle Stanford has been relieved of his coaching duties but will remain as the school’s athletic director.
The Golden Bears are currently riding a 20-game losing streak. They are 0-6 this year and have been outscored 268-40. They are coming off a 39-27 loss to Murphy last week.
Baldwin County communications director Chasity Riddick confirmed Stanford’s duties as head football coach will be divided among the current staff for the final four games of the season.
“As athletic director, we expect Mr. Stanford will remain a part of the team and work with the school administration to identify a new coach for the 2024 season,” Riddick said in a statement.
Stanford was 8-37 in his fifth year at the school. His best season came in 2020 when Robertsdale posted a 4-5 record.
The Mississippi native was hired as the Golden Bears head coach in April of 2019, replacing Chase Smith in the role. Stanford spent the previous three seasons as defensive coordinator at Olive Branch, Miss.
He posted this message on social media Tuesday afternoon:
It has been an unbelievable honor to serve as the Head Football Coach for the past five years. Knowing that I represented Robertsdale High, the City of Robertsdale and the entire Central Baldwin community is something that I cherished and took seriously. I will be forever grateful for how you opened up your arms to myself, Rebecca, Priscilla and Killens.
Thank you to the coaches who have dedicated their selves to the program for the past five years. There is no doubt that our staff has left a lasting impression on our athletes. You all have been great coaches and it was an honor to coach along side you.
Most importantly, to the players, thank you for all of your hard work. You are winners and represented Robertsdale to the best of your ability. Nothing will change with me. I’m always only a phone call away. Thank you for allowing me to coach you these past 5 years. With that I am going to continue as Athletic Director and will continue to support all athletic programs, Robertsdale High School, and the entire Central Baldwin Community.
Thank you all for the support, and I hope we have had a positive impact on your lives.
A native of New Albany, Miss., and a graduate of Ole Miss, Stanford also spent four years at Center Hill High in Olive Branch, finishing his tenure there as offensive coordinator. He was the defensive coordinator at Northwest Rankin in Jackson for two years and DC at Desoto Central in Southhaven for three years.
Robertsdale has struggled in the last two decades, going 34-141 since 2006. The team’s last playoff berth came in 2004. The last winning season came in 2001 – both under current UMS-Wright defensive coordinator Jay Koziol.
The Golden Bears finish the season with four road games, starting Friday at St. Paul’s.
