Class 6A No. 1 Saraland routs 7A Foley, 70-20

Nobody’s perfect. Whoever came up with that saying never saw the Saraland Spartans’ offense.

For the third straight game, the Saraland starters scored on every possession they were in the game. This time the offensive outburst resulted in a 70-20 win over Class 7A Foley.

Saraland (6-0 and ranked No. 1 in Class 6A) scored 10 touchdowns despite having only eight full possessions. In addition to the eight offensive touchdowns, the Spartans also got a touchdown on a blocked punt by Jamison Curtis that was returned by Cameron York, plus a 14-yard fumble return on defense by Camron Laffitte.

The Saraland starters did not play in the fourth quarter again this week.

“Our offense has been playing with great balance,” said Saraland coach Jeff Kelly. “We’ve been able to establish the run, then (quarterback) K.J. (Lacey) is just playing at an incredibly high level.”

Lacey completed 14-of-18 passes for 223 and two touchdowns. His one rush went for a 1-yard touchdown. The Spartans also ran the ball 30 times for 234 yards.

After opening with an overtime win over Lipscomb Academy of Nashville, the Spartans have won their last five games by 48, 44, 42, 66 and 50 points.

“We were not perfect by any means because we still made some mistakes,” said senior offensive lineman Brandon Autery. “We can still be more sharp.”

Play of the Game: Alabama commit Ryan Williams continues to make a case that he’s the best player in the country in the Class of 2025. He lined up at quarterback for two plays, and both resulted in touchdowns. One covered 6 yards and the other 25 yards. He also caught four passes for 56 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown catch.

By The Numbers: Saraland averaged 9.14 yards per play. … Foley receiver Perry Thompson, an Auburn commit, caught six passes for 140 yards, including a 79-yarder for a score where he caught the ball at the line of scrimmage and raced untouched for the score.

Game ball: The Saraland defense gets unfairly overlooked because of the Spartans’ explosive offense. The 20 points allowed Friday night marked the first time in five weeks that an opponent has scored more than seven points.

Coachspeak: “Our defense gave up a couple of big plays, but I’ve been very happy with our consistency and our effort,” Saraland coach Jeff Kelly.”

They said It: “Our defense is on fire. We’re redeeming ourselves from last year,” said Saraland defensive lineman Antonio Coleman, an Alabama commit.

Next week: Both teams return to region play next week. Saraland will visit Blount Friday night. Foley (2-3) will host Fairhope on Thursday for Hall of Fame night.
