Class 6A head football coach in Huntsville stepping down

A Class 6A program in Huntsville will be looking for a new head football coach.

Lee-Huntsville’s Irving McGuire will step down from his position to become an assistant principal at Sonnie Hereford Elementary, which is a Huntsville City Schools program.

“While I’m sad to leave the sidelines, I’m equally excited about this new chapter,” he wrote in a social media post. “Administration allows me to continue leading and guiding young people, just in anew capacity. I remain passionate about student growth, building a strong and purposeful culture, and supporting the work of dedicated educators.”

McGuire spent four seasons as the Generals’ head football coach, amassing a 13-28 record and leading his team to a playoff appearance in 2021.

Lee’s 2021 playoff appearance marked the Generals’ first playoff appearance since 2017; last season, Lee went 0-10.

Before his time at Lee-Huntsville, the Huntsville native served as defensive coordinator at Tuscaloosa County High School; he also served as an assistant Ardmore and graduated from J.O. Johnson High School.
