Class 6A Boys final: Caleb Holt, Buckhorn beat Mountain Brook
LeBron James.
Michael Jordan.
Caleb Holt?
Mountain Brook coach Tyler Davis mentioned Holt in the same sentence as those two NBA legends after the 15-year-old freshman scored 32 points and had 18 rebounds in Buckhorn’s 65-56 victory of his Spartans in Saturday’s Class 6A championship game.
“He’s an unbelievable talent, and the way the other players compete around him puts a strain on your team,” Davis said. “We tried to take him away, but he’s a generational talent. What can I say? That’s a Lebron James, Michael Jordan performance.”
The 6-foot-5 Holt scored 33 points and had 14 rebounds in his first game this week against McGill-Toolen, finishing with 65 points and 32 rebounds for the tournament. His long 3-pointer and subsequent three-point play in the third quarter Saturday sparked a 13-2 run that gave the Bucks the lead for good.
“If they give a 6A Player of the Year, and he doesn’t get it, they should retire it,” Buckhorn coach Patrick Harding said of Holt. “He was the best player on the biggest stage. He absolutely performed at the highest level. He probably played two of his best games of the season against two really good teams and good coaches.”

Behind Holt’s all-around play, Buckhorn led 44-39 entering the fourth quarter and slowly pulled away in the fourth to win the school’s first state title since 1995 and fourth overall.
“It’s not like I saved it until now,” Holt said of his performance. “You just have to do what you have to do on this stage, so I had to perform.”
The Buckhorn win denied Mountain Brook a seventh state title since 2013. The Spartans finished 26-8. Buckhorn finished 28-7, coming together in the second half of the season to complete the run to a state title.
“Frankly, we peaked at the right time,” Harding said. “At Christmas, we weren’t very good. I don’t even know if we liked each other a lot. It just came together. I just think it’s divine. I don’t know how else to say it.”
Star of the game: Hmmmm. Let’s go with Holt, who was 12-of-18 from the field, 3-of-5 from 3-point range and 5-of-9 from the free throw line. He also had four assists and two steals.
“I think I played pretty good,” he said. “I missed a lot of free throws, but other than that I thought I played pretty good.”
Stat sheet: Buckhorn – Terrence Robinson followed Holt with 10 points. Mountain Brook – Ty Davis led the way with 18 points, four assists and four steals. Kyle Layton followed with 15 points on 5-of-8 3-pointers. Julius Clark had 13 points and 11 rebounds.
By the numbers: Buckhorn outrebounded Mountain Brook 36-21 and had 13 offensive rebounds.
“Our No. 1 defensive key for this game was we had to rebound the ball, and it had to be our best defensive performance of the year,” Tyler Davis said. “We didn’t get it done. It wasn’t for a lack of effort. I think you are loading up against a generational talent and that sometimes allows others to sneak in there as well.”
Did you know? Buckhorn also beat Mountain Brook 60-52 in the Huntsville City Classic on Dec. 28.
They said it:
“It’s surreal. It’s not something we really dreamed we could do this year.” – Harding.
“Having this guy (Holt) helps your peace a lot.” – Harding.
“Before the game, they were over there hollering, and they are from Birmingham, so to beat them in their city in front of their town – it feels good.” – Holt.
“It’s a disappointing loss. We coach every day to be champions. We didn’t get the outcome we wanted at the end of the day.” – Davis.
“They journey was crazy. There were many ups and downs. We fought through a lot of adversity. Just to be in this game is a blessing. I’m not happy with the result, but we were glad to be here.” – Clark.
