Class 5A Girls semifinal: Hot-shooting Jasper tops Brewbaker Tech

Senior Mia Hollingsworth stroked a 3-pointer just 3 seconds into the girls Class 5A semifinals game for Jasper’s first shot at Birmingham’s Legacy Arena on Wednesday, setting the tone for the Vikings’ big 64-31 win over Brewbaker Tech.

Jasper, 30-4 on the year and winners of 23 consecutive games, jumped out to a quick 14-0 to the start the game. The Vikings led 18-3 after one quarter, 40-11 at the half and 56-18 headed into the fourth quarter.

“It is awesome to compete in the state finals,” Jasper coach Blake Laney said. “This is our first trip to the final four. We started so fast, you (would have) thought it was fourth trip here.”

The Vikings have a chance to complete the magical run and season with a win over Scottsboro or Gulf Shores in the championship game on Saturday morning.

Three Vikings scored in double figures led by Hollingsworth’s 26 points. Missy Odom, a 6-foot-2 sophomore, added 17 points and 9 rebounds. Another sophomore, Idaysia Mercer, chipped in 13 points and dished out 5 assists with 2 steals.

“We had a shoot-around at Samford today,” said Hollingsworth, a 5-9 guard. “I think that got us relaxed and familiar with the shooting background (of a large arena).”

Brewbaker Tech (19-15) of Montgomery, making an appearance in the state semifinals for the second consecutive year, got 10 points from senior Erin Martin. Junior Kennedi McGhee added 9 points and hauled down 12 rebounds while Jillian Baine scored 9.

Star of the game: Hollingsworth, who hit six 3-point baskets, led Jasper with 26 points.

Stat sheet: Jasper did not commit a turnover in the opening half while forcing 13 by Brewbaker Tech. Jasper finished with 7 turnovers while the Rams had 19. The Vikings outrebounded Brew Tech 38-37. The winners made 40.7 percent of their shots from the floor – 40 percent on 3-pointers – while holding the Rams to 24 percent from the floor and 15 percent on shots from beyond the 3-point arc.
