Nobody is going to miss.

That was the mentality of the Westminster Christian girls soccer team as a group of five juniors trotted out to midfield in anticipation of a final shootout to determine a champion.

The sixth-ranked Wildcats allowed a late goal to force overtime at 1-1, but were without error in grabbing a 4-2 shootout victory over No. 3 St. Michael in Saturday’s Class 4A girls state championship match at Huntsville’s John Hunt Park. Mark it down as a 2-1 (2OT) finish for Westminster Christian.

With the win, Westminster Christian (15-4-1) captured its first state title in program history.

“It’s a credit to the mental toughness of our girls,” Westminster Christian coach Hunter Chapman said. “They’ve been through so much adversity, individually and as a team. This is a tough group on and off the field and I’m proud of them for all of their hard work to culminate into this.”

The Wildcats from Huntsville struck first in the opening half, Jasmine Feld scoring on an unassisted shot through the goalkeeper’s hands in the 19th minute, and outshot St. Michael 13-12 despite the latter collecting more shots on goal.

Brianna Tinsley led Westminster Christian with five shots and Ella Henshaw and Jasmine Feld finished with three shots each – all three with a single shot on goal. Piper Blazier made five saves in regulation and overtime and allowed only two goals in the shootout.

AnnaLi Weekley was named MVP after scoring in the shootout in the title match and scoring four goals against Westbrook Christian in the semifinals.

“This is unreal, we worked for this the whole year,” Weekley said. “It wouldn’t be possible without our whole team and teammates around me. I work for them.”

St. Michael (19-6) was led by Francheska Arellano, who had five shots and two on goal, followed by Tatum Hoffman with two shots. Mimi Smith was credited with three saves through timed play, but gave up four goals during the shootout.

“This whole playoff experience for these girls, I couldn’t be more proud of them,” St. Michael coach Brian Daughtery said. “One game or one play doesn’t define any player or any team. We’re a school that’s had soccer for six years and this was my first year to coach them. It has been a joy and a blessing to watch them progress and grow.”

Late in the second half, during the 67th minute, Kathryn Ford tied the match at 1-1 off an assist from Maddie Key.

“It’s a full 80 minutes,” Daughtery said. “Don’t panic.”

Both teams attempted to win in regulation during the final 10 minutes, but had to settle for consecutive scoreless overtime sessions before settling the championship In a shootout.

Still locked at 1-1 following both overtime sessions, the Cardinals from Fairhope were first to attempt a shot during the shootout with Key and Hoffman missing the first two attempts. Abby Callahan and Maya Hise kept the shootout alive for another couple of rounds, but ultimately fell 4-2 to the Wildcats.

Westminster Christian scored goals on all four attempts in the shootout and was led off by Weekley, followed by Shelby Lane, Feld and Henshaw.
