Class 3A Girls semifinal: Clements rolls by Pike County

Clements jumped all over Pike County early Monday morning and rolled to a 56-25 victory in the Class 3A girls state semifinals at Legacy Arena in Birmingham.

The Colts opened the game with an 11-2 run, led 36-11 at the half and cruised in the second half.

“They were nervous,” Clements head coach Shane Childress said of his team’s start. “After we hit that first 3, I said, ‘Here we go.’ Our pressure was pretty good early.”

The Colts held the Bulldogs to just 20 percent shooting (9-of-45) and scored 29 points off 21 Pike County first-half turnovers. For the game, Clements had a 34-12 advantage in points in the paint and a 35-10 edge in points off turnovers.

Everyone who played for Clements scored. The Bulldogs only had three players score.

“They’re a very good team, hats off to Clements,” said Pike County head coach Melissa White. “Their ball movement was very good. Their offense gave us a little trouble, being able to stop the shooters. I don’t think we played our best game.”

Star of the Game: Junior Taylor Farrar scored a team-high 12 points, pulled down five rebounds, dished out five assists and recorded two steals.

Stat sheet: Sophomore Leah Childress scored 10 points and had five rebounds, four assists and four steals for Clements. Fellow sophomore Shakarri Bailey also scored 10 points and recorded five rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

Pike County’s senior Amity White scored a game-high 15 points. She also pulled down seven rebounds and grabbed two steals.

By the numbers: Clements shot 52 percent from the field (25-of-58). The Colts were credited with 17 steals. Pike County won the rebounding battle 35-29.

They Said it: “We’ve been getting up at 6 a.m. to practice and put in the work,” said senior Jenny Trent. “This team has so much potential, and we haven’t played our best game yet.”

Next up: Clements will play the winner of Trinity vs. Susan Moore at 12:30 p.m. Friday for the Class 3A title.
