City of Mobile releases potential budget ahead of new fiscal year
Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson’s administration has released a proposed budget of more than $300 million for fiscal year 2024, set to begin on October 1. The Mobile City Council, which has the final say over the budget, is in the process of considering the proposal.
“As we prepare the annual budget, we reflect upon the past with an eye towards the future,” Stimpson said in his introductory letter to the city council. “Together we have taken unprecedented steps to strengthen the fabric of our community and ensure a bright future for the City of Mobile.”
The most notable change to the budget is the additional revenue from the more than 19,000 west Mobile residents that joined the city in July when the annexation referendum passed. According to Stimpson’s letter, there is an additional $7.2 million in revenue in the budget as a result of annexation.
The city’s Capital Improvement Program, which funds infrastructure improvements throughout Mobile, will have a budget of around $75.2 million in 2024. This year, Mobile’s seven city councilmembers will be given $4 million apiece to use in their districts, up from $3 million in years past.
The city council voted to renew the city’s one-cent sales tax earlier this month, which provides most of the funding for the CIP program.
