City of Birmingham gathering supplies to help tornado victims in Selma

The City of Birmingham has announced a supply drive to help victims of a tornado that hit Selma on Thursday, leaving heavy damage in its wake.

A powerful storm front slammed into the historic city in Dallas County, cutting a wide swath of destruction through the downtown area.

To help Selma’s recovery efforts, specific items — such as bottled water, cleaning supplies, coats and jackets, diapers, paper towels and work gloves — will be collected at Boutwell Auditorium, 1930 Rev. Abraham Wood, Jr. Blvd. Donations will be accepted there Tuesday, Jan. 17 through Thursday, Jan. 19, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Here’s the list of items requested for the supply drive:

  • Body wash
  • Bottled water
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Coats and jackets (no other clothing items)
  • Deodorant
  • Diapers (adult and baby)
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • First aid supplies
  • Paper towels
  • Snacks
  • Toilet paper
  • Toothbrushes and toothpaste
  • Towels (face and body)
  • Work gloves

“The people of Selma are in the early stages of recovery after Thursday’s tornado left a path of destruction,” Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said on Saturday. “We want them to know they are not alone and Birmingham cares.”

The City of Birmingham is partnering with Christian Service Mission and Weil Wrecker Service for the supply drive. The wrecker service will take the items to Selma, according to a press release from the city.

As of Saturday afternoon, 13 tornadoes have been confirmed in Alabama during Thursday’s severe storms, including one in Autauga County that caused the deaths of seven people.

The tornado in Selma was classified as an EF-2, according to the National Weather Service, with winds topping 130 mph. Several injuries were reported, according to Selma Mayor James Perkins. No fatalities were confirmed.

The National Weather Service said storm surveys will continue across central Alabama. Cleanup and recovery efforts are ongoing, along with efforts to help tornado victims.
