Christian Barmore apologizes to Providence Police Department
New England Patriots defensive tackle Christian Barmore has apologized to the Providence Police Department after accusing its officers of “unprofessional” behavior and “racism at its finest.”
The apology comes after a traffic stop in Providence, Rhode Island, at around 1 a.m. EDT Wednesday resulted in Barmore’s car being impounded.
“A few days have gone by since the incident with the Providence police,” Barmore wrote on social media, “and I have had a chance to deeply reflect on my behavior. I want everyone to know that I’m sorry, and I take full accountability for my actions. I apologize to the Providence Police Department, my teammates and my family. My mother was a police officer, and I understand the pressures related to their job, which I didn’t make any easier by reacting in the manner that I did. I am using this as an opportunity to learn and do better. I have already met with members of the Providence Police Department to apologize in person. It is my hope that they accept my sincere apology. That meeting is just the first step of many that I am taking on the route to self-improvement.”
The former Alabama defensive lineman’s Jeep Grand Cherokee was pulled over because of a cover over a temporary license plate, WFXT-TV in Boston reported. Because Barmore came to a “slow-roll” stop, the officers thought the driver might be trying to conceal something, the police reported.
“Y’all crazy,” body-cam video showed Barmore shouting before leaving the vehicle. “I didn’t do (expletive) to y’all. I (expletive) dare y’all to touch me. I dare y’all to touch me. I’ll sue all y’all.”
Barmore was not arrested. His car was towed, and police reported they found an ash cup with marijuana under the driver-side seat along with several tubes filled with marijuana.
Barmore was issued a summons “for operation of an unregistered vehicle, display of plates and driving with expired registration.”
Barmore later posted, then deleted a tweet that read: “I just experienced for the first time 5 Providence cops being very unprofessional racism at its finest.”
A second-round NFL draft choice from Alabama’s undefeated CFP national-championship team for the 2020 season, Barmore has not played this season after behind hospitalized for blood clots during training camp.
“I had a conversation with him this morning,” Patriots coach Jerod Mayo said. “… What I will say is that I met with the captains, and we had a conversation on how to approach it as a team. Those guys handled it in the locker room. It is a conversation we had, and we’ll see how it goes, and how it looks going forward.”
