Chipotle refutes rumors on its future, announces building plans

For the past week, rumors have swirled on the internet about Chipotle filing for bankruptcy and going out of business.

Now, the Mexican chain is putting the misinformation to rest- No, they aren’t shutting down.

A spokesperson told ABC’s Good Morning America the claim Chipotle is closing restaurants is “false.”

“The false information stemmed from an inaccurate online article confusing Chipotle with a venture it tested in 2023. The story has since been corrected,” the spokesperson told ABC.

Both Forbes and USA Today point to the source of the misinformation as an article published on Unión Rayo. While the story was a report about the closure of Farmesa Fresh Eatery, a fast-casual business Chipotle tested in 2023, the article’s promotional image featured the Chipotle logo, reports Newsweek.

According to Good Morning America, Chipotle plans to open up to 345 new restaurants in 2025. The company plans to incorporate a drive-through lane in at least 80% of the new restaurants.
