Child star from 1980s sitcom found dead with service dog
Benji Gregory, who as a child actor portrayed Brian Tanner in the 1980s sitcom “Alf,” was found dead along with his service dog in a vehicle in Arizona.
TMZ reports Gregory’s sister, Rebecca, confirmed her brother was found last month in a vehicle in a parking lot outside a Chase Bank branch in Peoria, Arizona. He was 46 years old.
Gregory suffered from depression, bipolar disorder and had a sleep disorder, Rebecca tells TMZ. He often would stay awake for days, she said.
It’s suspected Gregory went into the bank to deposit residual checks, then returned to his vehicle and fell asleep and died of heat stroke. His service dog, Hans, also died, reports say.
The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s office has not released an official cause of death.
“In complete sadness and shock our family has lost one of the most beloved and wonderful men in our small circle,” Gregory’s cousin, Camille Jazzy Jenkins, writes on social media. “It has taken some time to process and come to terms with our loss. We are not okay … but take comfort knowing he is with his grandmothers.”
Arizona has been dealing with a heatwave for the past several weeks, with temperatures routinely well over 100 degrees.
“Alf” ran from 1986 to 1990 and featured an “Alien Life Form,” portrayed as a puppet, living with a family after crash-landing in their garage. Gregory also made appearances in “Murphy Brown,” “The A-Team,” “The Twilight Zone,” and “Punky Brewster.”
