Chiefs wide receiver pleads not guilty to 2 charges

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Justyn Ross pleaded not guilty to two misdemeanor charges in Johnson County (Kansas) District Court on Tuesday.

The former Central-Phenix City and Clemson standout was arrested on Monday afternoon and booked into the Johnson County Detention Center on a charge of criminal damage of more than $1,000 but less than $25,000.

On Tuesday afternoon at his arraignment, Ross was charged with domestic battery with no priors and criminal damage of less than $1,000.

Ross was released on a $2,500 personal-recognizance bond. He’s due back in the courtroom of Judge Curtis Sample in Olathe, Kansas, at 1:30 p.m. CDT Dec. 4.

Law-enforcement authorities were dispatched to an apartment in Shawnee, Kansas, on Monday afternoon. The dispatcher told Shawnee Police Department officers that the caller said Ross had been “dragging her through the house and has torn up the house.” The dispatcher said the woman was calling from a neighbor’s phone because Ross had broken her phone.

On Tuesday, Sample granted a request from the woman that allowed her two hours after the hearing to gather her belongings from Ross’ home. Ross was not allowed to go home until 7 p.m. Tuesday, but Ross’ attorney requested that a family member be presented when the woman collected her things. The judge also ordered Ross not to contact the alleged victim or witnesses.

Ross is in his second season with the Chiefs, although he did not play during his first campaign.

This season, Ross has played in all seven games and has been on the field for 81 offensive snaps and 63 special-teams plays. He has three receptions for 34 yards.

Ross joined the Chiefs last year as an undrafted rookie, but coming off foot surgery, he spent the 2022 campaign on injured reserve.

At 6-1, Kansas City has the best record in the AFC this season. The Chiefs visit the Denver Broncos at 3:25 CDT Sunday for their next game.
