Corner has rolled up five straight wins to start the 2023 football season and the Yellow Jackets have earned Hollis Wright Birmingham Player of the Week honors for the second straight week.
Defensive back Jace Boyd picked up 33 percent of the 8,237 votes cast in the Week 6 poll. The 6-foot-2, 181-pound senior had two interceptions to go with five tackles in Corner’s 42-21 win over Fultondale.
Last week, Corner defensive lineman Austin Reid was voted the Birmingham Player of the Week.
Corner moved up to eighth in the Class 4A Alabama High School Athletic Association rankings this week.
Desmond Watson of Banks Academy finished second in the poll with 21 percent of the votes. Watson had 9 receptions for 196 yards and three touchdowns in the AISA No. 8 Jets’ 28-6 win over Edgewood Academy. The junior also had two pass breakups on defense in the win.
Clay-Chalkville quarterback Jaylen Mbakwe was third in the balloting after leading the Cougars to a 36-33 road win over then Class 7A No. 1 Thompson. Mbakwe ran 27 times for 171 yards and four touchdowns for the Class 6A No. 2 Cougars. He also completed 9-of-11 passes for 76 yards in the nationally televised win.
Voting for the Hollis Wright Football Player of the Week opens on Sundays during the season and runs through Wednesday. Nominees are determined from statistics submitted by coaches or official team statisticians before noon each Saturday.
In Week 6, more than 41,000 votes were cast across the three AL.com player of the week polls.
