Check out the top vote-getters from the Week 1 state volleyball poll

More than 15,000 ballots were cast in the Week 1 AL.com Volleyball Player of the Week poll and one of the top performers for one of the state’s top teams came away with the top honors in convincing fashion.

Junior Baker Garside of St. Luke’s earned 4,676 of the 15,245 votes cast in the poll – good for 31 percent. The Wildcats’ setter had 122 assists, 22 digs, 12 kills and seven aces last week as her team opened the season at 5-1.

St. Luke’s added another victory this week and is the third-ranked team in Class 3A in the latest Alabama Sports Writers Association volleyball poll.

Madison County junior Addy Gustafson finished second in the first week’s poll. The Tigers’ setter picked up 17 percent of the balloting with 2,595 votes. In the first week of play, Gustafson had 119 assists and 65 digs. The Tigers are ranked second in Class 4A in the ASWA poll.

Emma Rigsby of Jasper was third in the voting. The sophomore setter had 139 assists, 29 digs and six aces for the Vikings, ranked ninth in Class 6A. Rigsby had 1,879 votes, 12 percent of the total.
