Mortimer Jordan junior Terence Gaines ran away with the Hollis Wright Birmingham high school Player of the Week balloting for Week 2, much as he did in a 35-28 win over Springville.

The 5-foot-11, 195-pound running back gained 255 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Blue Devils improved to 2-0 on the season. Gaines averaged 9.1 yards per carry on his 28 attempts.

Gaines garnered 66,990 of the 78,250 votes registered in the online poll – 86 percent.

Hunter Hale of Helena caught seven passes for 101 yards and a pair of touchdowns and scored on a 97-yard kickoff return to finish second in the balloting. Helena beat Buckhorn 55-7, the second straight 50-point outburst to open the season for the Huskies. Hale finished with 252 all-purpose yards.

Hewitt-Trussville’s Jadon Loving was third in the fan vote after catching five passes for 149 yards and three TDs in the Huskies 42-27 win on the road at Gadsden City.

Voting for the Hollis Wright Birmingham Football Player of the Week opens on Sundays during the season and runs through Wednesday. Nominees are determined from statistics submitted by coaches or official team statisticians before noon each Saturday.

In Week 2, more than 91,000 votes were cast across the three AL.com player of the week polls.
