Charles Henderson rides second-half surge past Headland in 5A
With standout point guard and Troy football signee Jywon Boyd dealing with a nagging back injury, Charles Henderson coach Timothy Fayson needed someone to step up in the second half of Friday’s Class 5A South Regional semifinal.
Bradley Prestwood was that guy.
The senior forward scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half as the Trojans pulled away for an easy 50-29 victory over Headland at Garrett Coliseum.

“He has the ability to really step up, and we need him. We depend on him,” Fayson said of Prestwood.
Charles Henderson (21-10) advances to play No. 4 Vigor (26-6) in the South Regional final at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday for the right to play in the final four. Headland, which finished its season at 16-11, had a bye in the sub-regional round after No. 3 Williamson had to forfeit for using an ineligible player.
“It’s always feels great to win and have this experience” Fayson said. “It’s the first time for a lot of these guys to be here, so I’m proud of how they played.”
The game was tied 18-18 at the half, but it was no contest for most of the second half. The Trojans outscored Headland 13-5 in the third quarter to build a 31-23 advantage and finished the game on a 15-0 run over the last 5:44.
Prestwood also had 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals. Boyd played 30 minutes but was just 2-of-5 from the field and aggravating a back injury from football on a hard fall in the third quarter.
“Defense picked up in the second half, and we were able to hide a little bit in that zone, so I thought that brought us some time,” Fayson said.
Headland struggled from the field, hitting just 12-of-41 overall and 3-of-19 from 3-point range. The Rams made just one of their first 15 3 attempts. They also committed 24 turnovers and were outrebounded 40-28.
Tylen Williams was Headland’s only player in double figures with 12 points. He also finished with 8 rebounds and 5 steals. For Charles Henderson, Bray Jones added 9 points.
Fayson said he was able to watch a little of Vigor’s win over Eufaula in the first boys game of the day.
“Whew,” he said. “We have a lot of work to do before next Wednesday. They are a good team.”
