Charles Barkley not looking forward to NBA All-Star Game in ‘rat-infested’ San Francisco
Golden State Warriors fans are liable to boo Charles Barkley again when the NBA All-Star Game is played at the Chase Center in San Francisco – if he’s there.
While appearing on TNT’s “Inside the NBA” on Thursday night, Barkley referred to San Francisco as “rat-infested.”
“If (Detroit guard Cade Cunningham) don’t make the All-Star team, I’m not going,” Barkley said while highlights from the Pistons’ game against the Indiana Pacers were rolling. “I’m not going to that rat-infested place out in San Francisco.”
“Inside the NBA” host Ernie Johnson told Barkley: “Just look at the highlights.”
But when fellow analyst Kenny Smith told Barkley, “San Francisco’s a beautiful city,” the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame member responded: “It is not a beautiful city. … Y’all are not going to make me like San Francisco.”
Johnson wrapped it up by saying: “I know. Just keep it to yourself.”
At last season’s All-Star Game in Indianapolis, Barkley said San Francisco was full of “homeless crooks” and a “bulletproof vest” was required to walk on the streets.
That came after Barkley drew the ire of Golden State supporters by picking the Dallas Mavericks to beat the Warriors in the Western Conference finals in 2022 because he wanted the team’s “obnoxious” fans to “suffer.”
A former Leeds High School and Auburn standout, Barkley was selected for 11 All-Star games during his 16-season NBA career. He was the MVP of the 1991 NBA All-Star Game, when he had 17 points and 22 rebounds in the East’s 116-114 victory.
Golden State also was the host team for the All-Star Game in 1967 and 2000.
