Charles Barkley challenges Alabama, Auburn, UAB to make March Madness pact in Spokane

Charles Barkley isn’t happy with three Alabama teams in Spokane, even if his broadcasting partners didn’t seem to share his frustration.

During halftime of Samford’s game with Kansas on Thursday night, Ernie Johnson pointed out Friday’s lineup of game and said UAB’s game against San Diego State was “another one of those Alabama teams out there in Spokane.”

“Yeah, thanks, committee,” Barkley said.

Clark Kellogg replied, “Someone has to go way out there. It was coincidence. They didn’t do that on purpose, Chuck.”

“They have a plane,” Kenny Smith told Barkley. “They can get there.”

Some jokes were made, laughs were had at Barkley’s expense. However, the former Auburn star laid down a challenge to the three teams from the state.

“Alabama, Auburn and UAB, make a pact,” he said. “Cheer for each other this one time in your life., so we’ll have a home-court something.”

It isn’t the first time Barkley mentioned it.

“I’m trying to figure out why they sent all the Alabama schools to Spokane, Washington,” Barkley said Monday of Auburn, Alabama and UAB. “I have a problem with that first and foremost.”

He also isn’t the only person to mention the “coincidence.” Auburn coach Bruce Pearl doesn’t like it.

Bruce Pearl’s Tigers earned a No. 4 seed and will play No. 13-seeded Yale (22-9) on Friday. The Blazers earned a No. 12 seed (22-11) and will play fifth-seeded San Diego State (24-10) on Friday. The two in-state schools could meet in a potential second-round game on Sunday.

Nate Oats’ Crimson Tide (21-11) will enter the West Region as a No. 4 seed and faces No. 13 Charleston (27-7) in Spokane on Friday.
