Charges dropped against Alabama speeder ordered to apologize to police or go to jail

An Ozark man ordered to apologize to the officer who pulled him over for speeding will not have to write a letter after the judge today dismissed the case.

Reginald Burks, 39, was taking his kids to school in December when he was pulled over in Ozark for going 28 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour zone. After the officer finished writing the ticket, Burks said he stood in front of his car, forcing the father to back up and pull around to get out.

Burks told the officer to “get your ass out of the way,” according to an interview with AL.com.

When he came to court in April, officials said he would have to apologize to the officer or face up to 30 days in jail, Burks said.

Burks told AL.com that he was prepared to plead guilty and pay the fines and fees, but did not want to write the required apology letter. A hearing had been set for June 4 and Burks said he was willing to go to jail rather than write the letter.

Burks story gained national attention in recent weeks, appearing on nationally syndicated radio and television shows.

Today’s order dismissing the case indicated that city prosecutors no longer wanted to pursue the matter. He will not have to return to court.
