Central Regional boys: 3A No. 1 Sumter Central builds big lead, holds off Trinity rally
Sumter Central followed a familiar script in downing Trinity in the Class 3A Central Regional final at Birmingham’s Bill Harris Arena on Wednesday.
The top-ranked Jaguars built a big lead then held off a furious rally for the 58-47 victory.
“This was a normal game for us,” said Sumter Central coach Jazmin Mitchell said. “Credit the Trinity coach for a good plan coming out of the half. It got our attention and helped us play better in the final period.”
The Jaguars (22-3) built a 27-11 halftime lead then withstood a 23-9 third quarter rally by Trinity.
Trinity opened the second half in a full-court press. which forced numerous turnovers and helped cut the deficit to a single basket.
“We had multiple opportunities to win the game,” said Trinity coach Matt Arrighi. “They are a good team and weathered our run. We played with nothing to lose in the second half.”
“We got to relaxed in the game,” said Sumter Central forward Jonathan Finch. “We turned heat up defensively and are heading back to the final four.”
MVP Finch converted consecutive 3-pointers in the final period, ending with 19 points and 8 rebounds.
John Morris scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Wildcats.
