Center Point man extradited from Memphis federal prison in deadly 2020 Birmingham shooting
A 28-year-old Center Point man has been returned to Alabama to face charges in a 2020 deadly Birmingham shooting.
Torace Jakhino Laster is charged with murder in the death of 26-year-old Lamar Markeith Harris.
Birmingham police announced the charge against Laster in 2023.
At the time, Laster was in the custody of the U.S. Bureau of Prisons at Federal Correctional Institute Memphis, serving a 2 ½ year federal sentence for convictions of being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of oxycodone with intent to distribute.
Jefferson County Jail records show Laster was extradited Tuesday to Alabama. He was booked into the county lockup at 6:32 p.m. and remains held without bond.
Harris was killed June 14, 2020.
East Precinct officers responded about 12:15 a.m. that Sunday to a Shot Spotter call of numerous rounds fired in the 7600 block of Third Avenue South.
When they arrived, they found Harris unresponsive in the front yard of a residence.
He had been shot multiple times and was pronounced dead on the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.
Birmingham police say the shooting appeared to stem from Laster being upset with Harris over a reported theft committed by the victim. Harris was riding a bicycle when he was fatally shot.
