CBI passes on Detroit Mercy, meaning Antoine Davis likely won’t break Pete Maravich’s record

Pete Maravich’s NCAA basketball scoring record appears safe.

The College Basketball Invitational passed on Detroit Mercy on Sunday, leaving the Titans and record-challenger Antoine Davis without a postseason home. Davis, the son of former Alabama player and UAB coach Mike Davis, finishes his five-year career three points behind Maravich.

Davis — the two-time Horizon League Player of the Year and a finalist for the Lou Henson Award as the top mid-major player in the country — totaled 3,664 points in 143 career games. Maravich totaled 3,667 points in 83 games over just three seasons (1968-70), as freshmen were not permitted to play on the varsity level during his time at LSU.

Davis — who was born in Bloomington, Ind., but who lists Birmingham as his hometown — started as a true freshman at Detroit in 2018-19, but got a fifth year of eligibility due to the COVID pandemic. He scored 28 points in what now appears to be his final college game, a 71-66 loss to Youngstown State in the Horizon League quarterfinals on March 2.

Teams must have a winning record to play in the NIT, which set its 32-team field on Sunday night. The CBI has no such requirement, though Indiana State at 16-16 is the only .500-or-below team in this year’s 16-team bracket.

Detroit has just a 14-19 record, but was considered a potential draw for the CBI due to the presence of Davis and his pursuit of Maravich’s record. School and tournament officials seemed amenable to the idea of the Titans playing in the CBI, which requires a $27,000 entry fee.

However, there had been widespread backlash about the possibility in recent days. In particular, Maravich’s son, Jaeson (who briefly played at Alabama in the late 1990s), called Davis playing in a postseason tournament just to break his late father’s record “bush league” (Pete Maravich died of sudden heart failure in 1998 at age 40).

“I think that would be buying a record,” Jaeson Maravich told Outkick.com. “That would look bad. It would be a farce if they play in the tournament. Nothing against the kid. He’s a great player. But if the school goes to that tournament, it’s bush league. It would be crazy. They wouldn’t deserve the record.”

With the CBI out, there appears to be nowhere else for Davis and the Titans to continue their season. The Basketball Classic, a 16-team tournament founded last year, has not updated its website since the 2022 event concluded.

Another upstart tournament, the College Hoops Ps8 (Postseason 8) initially indicated a 2023 launch on its website. However, the site’s landing page now includes a “March 2024″ start date.

The 16-team CBI includes North Alabama, which is the No. 13 seed and will face No. 4 Southern Utah on Saturday in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Lions, a member of the ASUN Conference, are 18-14 this season.
