Jalen Hurts on Eagles’ 7-game winning streak: ‘I don’t believe in momentum’

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts handed the football to running back Saquon Barkley 26 times and got 255 yards on Sunday night. He threw it to Barkley four times and got 47 more yards.

An offseason free-agent signing, Barkley scored on touchdown runs of 70 and 72 yards as the Eagles ran their winning streak to seven games with a 37-20 victory over the Los Angeles Rams.

“He’s a hell of a player,” Hurts said. “I know we’re fortunate to have him. I’m fortunate to have him. He’s playing his tail off, and he’s having fun. Winning’s the most important thing. (Having fun is) probably the second-most important thing, but it’s relative. But he just added a new dimension for us, and we just have to continue to build off of that.”

Hurts threw his final pass on Sunday night with 10:37 left in the game, just before a field goal put the Eagles ahead 30-14. Barkley still had his 72-yard touchdown run ahead of him to put the game completely out of the Rams’ reach with 2:44 to play.

“He set the tone for us, especially at the end,” Hurts said. “I think even these last few weeks, we’ve had some of those games where they kind of played out different in the course of the game, but you think about these four-minute situations where he takes it over. And I think back to — and I told Saquon this — I think back to moments where we may have lost a game in the past or maybe mismanaged a four-minute situation where he’s truly making things easier for us when it comes to how we handle four-minute situations, because of his capabilities, even with a loaded box, being able to hit a home run.”

While Barkley set a franchise single-game record for rushing yards on Sunday night and pushed his season total to 1,392 rushing yards in his first 11 games for Philadelphia, Hurts did more than hand off against Los Angeles.

“He was efficient,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said of Hurts’ performance. “He made plays with his legs. He made plays with his arm. Took care of the football. And so, I thought, he was super-efficient. Our run game was really cooking, but when we needed to pass it, he had some big-time completions to AJ (Brown), particularly on third down and a big one at the end of the third quarter.

“Jalen is a winner. I can’t stress that enough. I know I say that every time I come up here but look how many games we’ve won in these past four years. We’ve won a crap ton of games, and Jalen’s touching the ball every single play on offense to help us do that.”

The former Alabama quarterback completed 15-of-22 passes for 179 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions and ran for 39 yards on 12 carries against the Rams.

Hurts’ touchdown pass came on a 6-yard throw to Brown as Philadelphia took its first lead at 13-7 with 1:27 left in the first half.

RELATED: JALEN HURTS HAS ‘PURPOSE BEHIND EVERY TOUCHDOWN’

After his 18-yard scramble was nullified by offsetting penalties on third-and-10 at the Los Angeles 44-yard line, Hurts came back with a 31-yard competition to Barkley to set up Kenny Gainwell’s 13-yard touchdown run on the next play as the Eagles extended their lead to 27-14 with 6:17 left in the third quarter.

The final play of that period was a 28-yard connection between Hurts and Brown on a field-goal drive, and Barkley scored his 72-yard touchdown after Hurts got the Rams to jump offside on fourth-and-1 at the Philadelphia 18-yard line.

“Obviously, being able to play complementary football, that’s important,” Hurts said. “Being able to be efficient is important. And, obviously, we have multiple ways that we can attack teams and do things. And so I think it’ll hit at some point in terms of when we’re asked to do some of these certain things. But duty hasn’t called for some of those moments yet, so when it does, I have confidence that we’ll be ready for it.”

Philadelphia’s most recent loss came on Sept. 29. At 9-2, the Eagles have a 2.5-game lead in the NFC East and the conference’s second-best record heading to Baltimore to play the Ravens at 3:25 p.m. CST Sunday.

At this point last season, Philadelphia had a 10-1 record but won only once more in the remainder of the season.

“I don’t believe in momentum,” Hurts said. “I don’t think it’s real. I think it can begin and end at any moment. And we have to make sure that we’re not relying on that facade of momentum. Just growing and challenging ourselves to grow every day. Holding each other accountable and having those conversations we need to have because we’re not a finished product. We’re nowhere near a finished product. And there’s so much more out there for us to go out there and do.

“And so there’s no sense of satisfaction. It’s great to go out there and play with confidence, feed off of one another. That’s what team is about. Team is about the group of individuals that come together to achieve a common goal and understanding the sacrifices that come with that. But, you know, we’re not satisfied.”

Legendary country singers offer new twist on Southern classic: ‘One of my favorite records’

Two founding members of Alabama, Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry, have joined forces with country singer Chris Janson to remake a classic hit. A new version of Alabama’s “Christmas in Dixie” was released on Nov. 22, along with an accompanying video.

Janson takes center stage in the video, handling lead vocals for the remake. Owen and Gentry are prominently featured in the holiday ballad, however, singing harmonies and chiming in for the chorus. (See the new “Christmas in Dixie” video below.)

“Christmas in Dixie,” a signature song for Alabama, originally was released as a single in 1982. It was included on the country group’s first holiday album, “Alabama Christmas,” in 1985, and remains a cherished fan favorite.

“I’ve always loved this song, and I’m really proud of the cut,” Janson said via social media. “Randy and Teddy really brought it over the finish line. They’re the best, and this will always be one of my favorite records of my life.”

Janson, 38, has five studio albums to his credit, released 2015-2023. He’s known for singles such as “Buy Me a Boat,” “Fix a Drink,” “Good Vibes,” “Done,” “Drunk Girl” and “All I Need Is You.” Janson has collaborated with other country artists, such as Lee Brice and Alabama native Holly Williams. He also has writing credits on songs recorded by Tim McGraw (”Truck Yeah”), LoCash (”I Love This Life”) and more.

Janson’s collaboration with Owen, 74, and Gentry, 72, isn’t the first cover of “Christmas in Dixie” to hit the airwaves. The song was covered by Kenny Chesney in 2003 (with Owen as a featured artist) and by Home Free in 2020 (with a vocal assist from Owen and the Alabama band listed as the featured artist).

Jason Aldean, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Easton Corbin and Chapel Hart have recorded their own versions of “Christmas in Dixie,” as well.

Alabama, formed in 1969 in Fort Payne, has a long and distinguished history in country music. Owen, the lead singer, founded the band as Wildcountry with his cousin, bassist Gentry. They recruited another cousin, guitarist and fiddler Jeff Cook, to join them, and he remained a key part of Alabama for more than five decades. (Cook died in 2022 after a battle with Parkinson’s disease.)

The band changed its name to Alabama in 1977 and became one of the most successful groups in country music, crossing over onto the pop charts and peaking in the 1980s with multiplatinum albums and a slew of radio hits. These included “Tennessee River,” “Mountain Music,” “Dixieland Delight,” “The Closer You Get,” “Song of the South,” “Roll On (Eighteen Wheeler)” and many more.

The band continued to record and perform regularly until the early 2000s, playing to a devoted fan base. Alabama traveled on a high-profile farewell tour in 2003-2004, but returned to the stage several times over the years. One of the most notable shows was the 2011 Bama Rising benefit concert at the BJCC Arena in Birmingham. Alabama headlined the star-studded event, raising about $2.2 million for tornado relief in its home state.

Alabama reunited for a “Back to the Bowery” tour in 2013 and released a new album, “Southern Drawl,” in 2015. “American Christmas” — a holiday album that included an unplugged rendition of “Christmas in Dixie” — was released by the band in 2017.

Alabama is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. Alabama was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum in Nashville in October 2019. The band also received the hall’s first Lifetime Achievement Award.

In October 2024, Owen was named a BMI Icon by Broadcast Music Inc., a nationwide performing rights organization. He and Gentry continue to tour as Alabama. They have three shows scheduled in December, plus a date in summer 2025 at the York State Fair in Pennsylvania.

Alabama Attorney General co-files US Supreme Court brief opposing transgender athletes

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall is continuing to challenge the legality of transgender women and girls competing in sports.

Marshall announced on Friday that he co-filed an amicus brief along with the Arkansas attorney general to the U.S. Supreme Court.

According to a press release, the brief asks the high court to review “a lower court’s decision that the Constitution prohibits States from restricting girls’ sports teams to biological females.”

In September, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals held that a 2022 Arizona law prohibiting trans-women and girls from playing sports that align with their gender identity likely violates the Equal Protection Clause.

The brief also had support from 22 other states including Alaska, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

Marshall has also previously filed two similar briefs regarding laws in West Virginia and Idaho.

“Parents of daughters are rightfully outraged at the loss of positions on teams and college scholarships,” Marshall stated. “As our multiple briefs to the Supreme Court show, it’s time to return to fairness in opportunity for sports.”

Over the last few years, Alabama has signed into law restrictions against transgender athletes competing in sports that align with their gender identity in public schools and colleges.

Trans-rights organizations have argued that the emphasis on transgender athletes is part of a cultural strategy by conservatives that only further marginalizes a vulnerable population.

“Anti-trans sports bans risk further marginalizing young people who already face tremendous challenges in school,” according to the Human Rights Campaign.

“Proponents of these bans suggest that trans athletes are pretending to be trans in order to do well at sports – ignoring entirely the incredible stigma trans youth face.”

The Human Rights Campaign has also stated that the emphasis on trans-women and girls is a sexist argument as anti-trans sports bans often overlook trans-boys. The organization says this is because those who oppose trans athletes participating in sports don’t think trans-boys can compete with cisgender boys which is a sexist assumption.
