AHSAA golf: West Point brothers highlight delayed state championship Round 1

West Point High School brothers Bailey and Rawlin Sutter grabbed the limelight of the 76th AHSAA State Golf Championships on Monday with the two top rounds as the participants battled through inclement weather much of the day at Oxmoor Valley RTJ Golf Course in Birmingham.

Stormy weather conditions kept several classes from completing their first rounds – forcing an early 7:30 a.m. start for those still needing to complete their first 18 holes.

The Sutters, however, had no trouble getting done. Bailey shot the day’s top score – an 8-under 64 – and Rawlin finished 3-under 69. Their strong rounds helped West Point High School finish the first round with a 293-team total – 5 over par – to lead the Class 5A boys team race. Bayside Academy was second after the first round at 306, Guntersville was third at 307 and Andalusia was fourth at 340.

All teams are scheduled to play 36 holes in the tournament which is set to conclude Tuesday. Round 2 is set to begin at 8:30 a.m.

Golfers rode in carts Monday in an effort to speed up play due to the expected weather conditions. If weather conditions for Tuesday remain as projected, players will ride in golf carts again and remain in the same groups as Round 1.

It remains the intention of the AHSAA to have a 36-hole championship for all classifications. However, as a reminder, per AHSAA policy, all players in a classification must complete a minimum of 9 holes to crown a champion.

Of those finishing 18 holes Monday, Lee-Scott’s boys lead Class 3A with a 306 team total. Whitesburg Christian is second at 311. Haleyville leads the Class 4A boys at 12-over 300. Jackson is second at 307. In the girls competition, Grissom finished at 8-over 224 total to lead Class 7A. Auburn was 2 shots back at 226, followed by Hewitt-Trussville at 233 and UMS-Wright at 235. Wicksburg’s girls finished with 34-over 250 to lead Class 1A/3A. Alabama Christian was 31 strokes back at 281.

Klare Jamison of Grissom had the low girls round of the day with a 5-under 67 in Class 7A. Frances Brown of UMS-Wright shot even-par 72. Julie Waldo of Alabama Christian shot a 4-under 68 in Class 1A/3A and Providence Christian’s Kamdyn Kelley finished 1-under 71 after the first round.

Jackson’s Cooper Garris also finished 1-under 71 to lead the Class 4A boys and Andrew Turner of American Christian finished with an even-par 72. In Class 3A boys play, Boone Thigpen of Rogers and Jackson McIntyre of Montgomery Academy each finished 4-over 76 to lead that division. However, not all players completed their rounds Monday.

The tournament is being played on Oxmoor Valley’s Ridge and Valley courses.

No. 10 Tuscaloosa County takes down defending champ Bob Jones in 7A semis

Tuscaloosa County was forced to move its decisive game against Bob Jones to a neutral site because of soggy conditions at its own field, but that didn’t stop the rain from following and causing an almost-hour delay at the top of the second inning.

Torrential downpours and relocation was not enough to distract the heroics of Joel Gross and Dillon Dubose as the 10th-ranked Wildcats survived a 3-1 thriller over No. 2 Bob Jones in Game 3 of Monday’s already delayed Class 7A semifinal series at Spain Park.

Tuscaloosa County (32-13) lost the opener 4-3 but won consecutive games, 10-8 and 3-1, to win the best-of-three series and advance to the first state title series in program history.

“It was a tough three games against a great team,” Tuscaloosa County coach Nick Richardson said. “We fought through rain, had to come to a neutral site to play because our place was too wet, and this is a testament to how tough our team is. These guys came out and got it done.”

The Wildcats shut down the Bob Jones side in the second inning, following a lightning delay, and jumped ahead 1-0 on an RBI double from Gross. Ford Traweek and Jashaun Moten had consecutive one-out singles and the former was brought in on Gross’ hit.

Tuscaloosa County added to its advantage in the fourth as Gross brought home another run on a sacrifice fly. Brooks Mellown led off the inning with a single, but it was Traweek who scored after reaching on a fielder’s choice.

“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little nervous,” Gross said. “Everybody had my back and it was awesome. You can’t replace that feeling. It was amazing.”

Bob Jones (37-12) got a lead-off double from Robert Chatmon II in the fifth, and catcher Mick Tyrell scored Chatmon on a double to cut the Wildcat advantage to 2-1. The Patriots managed only one baserunner in the final two innings.

The Wildcats added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single from Moten, who scored Camden Barnett. Gross reached on an error with the next at-bat, but Bob Jones turned a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

“Today it’s been Joel (Gross), today Jashaun (Moten) had a big hit, there were several big hits today,” Richardson said. “It’s always someone different with this team and you never know who it’s going to be. These guys have done a great job of sticking together this season.”

Star of the Game: Dubose. The sophomore pitcher gave up 1 run off 8 hits and struck out 8 against a single walk. He was one batter shy of earning the complete-game victory but was forced to the pine due to pitch count.

“It was great. That’s a tough team, they worked all season, and we were able to outlast them. Great outing for myself. We worked all season and earned this win,” he said.

Stat sheet: Tuscaloosa County – Gross finished 1-of-2 with a pair of RBIs, and Moten was 2-of-2 with an RBI and a walk. Keller, Barnett and Brooks Mellown all finished 1-of-3 and Traweek scored 2 runs. Bob Jones – Camden Martin was 2-of-3 at the plate and was tagged with the loss after allowing 2 runs off 5 hits in 4.1 innings of work. Chatmon was 2-of-3 with a run scored, and Tyrell was 1-of-3 with an RBI.

Coachspeak: “It’s great. The community, you see all the people here, Northport showed up in Birmingham today. We’re super proud of guys, super proud of our coaches and super proud of our administration and community.” — Tuscaloosa County’s Nick Richardson

They said it: “We’re ready. We’re ready.” — Gross

“We just got to keep doing what we’re doing.” — Dubose

What’s next: Tuscaloosa County advances to face No. 3 Enterprise in the Class 7A best-of-three championship series. Game 1 is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Thursday at Oxford’s Choccolocco Park.

NFL sets its Black Friday matchup for 2025 season

As the winner of the 2024 NFL championship, the Philadelphia Eagles likely will be a staple of the league’s nationally televised, stand-alone schedule in the 2025 campaign.

The NFL plans to release its complete 2025 schedule on Wednesday night, but the league has announced five stand-alone games already, and the Eagles are in three of them.

The NFL announced on Monday night that Philadelphia will play the Chicago Bears in the league’s Black Friday game. The Eagles and Bears will square off at 2 p.m. CST Nov. 28 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Prime Video will televise the contest.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is an Alabama alumnus, and a former Crimson Tide standout was the winning quarterback in the NFL’s inaugural Black Friday game last season, when Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami Dolphins defeated the New York Jets 34-13.

Philadelphia has the most Alabama alumni on its offseason roster in the NFL. Other former Crimson Tide players joining Hurts on the Eagles are:

  • Linebacker Jihaad Campbell
  • Guard Landon Dickerson
  • Tight end Cameron Latu
  • Cornerback Eli Ricks
  • Wide receiver DeVonta Smith
  • Guard Tyler Steen
  • Defensive tackle Byron Young

Earlier on Monday, the NFL announced the Eagles will play the Dallas Cowboys in the first game of the 2025 season at 7:20 p.m. CDT Sept. 4 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

FOX Sports also announced on Monday that the Eagles and Washington Commanders would square off in an NFC East game as part of a Saturday doubleheader on Dec. 20. After the Eagles-Commanders game at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, the Bears and Green Bay Packers will meet in an NFC North game at Soldiers Field in Chicago.

The NFL will unveil the full schedule for the 2025 season at 7 p.m. Wednesday on NFL Network and ESPN2.

Madison makes acting fire chief Brandy Williams permanent

Madison has taken the “acting” tag off its fire chief, naming Brandy Williams to the post she has been filling on an interim basis since February.

Williams’ appointment is effective immediately. She has been serving as interim fire chief since David Bailey resigned. The latter had held the position since 2017.

Williams joined Madison Fire and Rescue in 1998, and several city officials lauded what they called her dedication to Madison.

“You’ve been here a long time, and you’ve earned it,” Councilor Teddy Powell said after the unanimous vote to confirm her appointment. “I have gotten a tremendous amount of emails from … people who have worked with you for years — it means a lot.”

Mayor Paul Finley said one of the things he and councilors thought was important as the city considered a new fire chief was, “To make sure … that the people we bring in, stay.”

“The atmosphere within the fire department is critical, and I think [Williams] has the support,” Finley said. “We’re not just naming someone, it’s someone who has a game plan and a commitment from her team.”

Upon the vote, councilors and many uniformed firefighters in attendance stood and applauded.

Madison Fire and Rescue has, “A plan moving forward, and we will continue to build on that plan,” she said. “We will go forward and be better every day.”

The position pays $169,267.
