Carson Tinker returns to the NFL

Former Alabama long snapper Carson Tinker returned to the NFL by signing with his original team, the Jacksonville Jaguars announced on Monday.

In the Jaguars’ 28-23 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in their preseason opener on Saturday, Jacksonville long snapper Ross Matiscik sustained a shoulder injury on his first play and missed the remainder of the game.

Reserve tight end Josh Pederson, the son of Jaguars coach Doug Pederson, handled the snaps on punts the rest of the way. Jacksonville compensated by attempting a 2-point conversion after each of its four touchdowns and going for it on fourth down five times.

Tinker’s time with the Jaguars could be temporary. Matiscik has been Jacksonville’s long snapper since 2020, signed a five-year contract extension in 2022 and is “day-to-day” in the estimation of Doug Pederson after Saturday’s injury.

But the Jaguars need a long snapper for practice at least, and Jacksonville’s next preseason game is at noon CDT Saturday against the Detroit Lions.

After Tinker served as the long snapper on the Crimson Tide’s 2011 and 2012 BCS national-championship teams, he handled all the Jaguars’ long-snapping duties from 2013 through 2016. He missed the 2017 season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in training camp. Tinker returned to the Jaguars in 2018, but five games into the campaign, he suffered another knee injury and missed the remainder of the season.

Jacksonville released Tinker with one season remaining on a four-year, $3.65 million contract extension, and he was out of football in 2019 and on the New York Giants’ practice squad in 2020.

In 2021, Tinker snapped for the Buccaneers from the second through the ninth games while Tampa Bay’s regular long snapper, Zach Triner, recovered from an injury sustained in the season-opening contest.

Tinker then made a one-game stop with the Las Vegas Raiders, playing on Dec. 5 with regular long snapper Trent Sieg on reserve/COVID-19 for the week.

Tinker finished the 2021 season on the Rams’ practice squad as security behind Matthew Orzech through Los Angeles’ Super Bowl victory, but he never appeared in a game.

Last season, Tinker handled the long-snapping in every game for the Seattle Seahawks. He joined the team five days before the opening contest with regular long snapper Tyler Ott out with a shoulder injury.

The addition of Tinker moved Jacksonville into a tie with the Philadelphia Eagles for the most players with Alabama football roots. Each team has 13. The Jaguars from Alabama high schools and colleges include:

· Josh Allen, outside linebacker, Abbeville

· Tank Bigsby, running back, Auburn

· Chandler Brewer, offensive lineman, Florence

· Daniel Thomas, safety, Lee-Montgomery, Auburn

· Carson Tinker, long snapper, Alabama

· Darious Williams, cornerback, UAB

· Darryl Williams, offensive lineman, Bessemer City
