Carolina Panthers reach out for former Auburn linebacker again

The Carolina Panthers have released Chandler Wooten three times this season. The NFL team has brought him back after every release, although the Panthers had to sign him off the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad this time around.

Carolina announced on Tuesday that it had signed the former Auburn linebacker to its active roster one week after he had signed with the 49ers.

The Panthers reeled Wooten back in after playing Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals with three healthy inside linebackers. And one, Jon Rhattigan, is strictly a special-teamer, with one defensive snap and 317 special-teams plays for Carolina in 2024.

That left Josey Jewell and Jacoby Windmon, an undrafted rookie with two snaps of regular-season experience, to hold down the position in the Panthers’ 36-30 overtime victory against Arizona.

Carolina waived Wooten when it made its active-roster reduction from the preseason to the regular season. The Panthers signed Wooten the next day for their practice squad. He moved up to the active roster on Oct. 2, but after playing 59 defensive snaps and 48 special-teams plays in three games, he was waived on Oct. 22. Two days later, Wooten was back on the Carolina practice squad for a two-week stay before being released again on Nov. 7.

Carolina plays the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in an NFC South game at noon CST Sunday at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

Wooten entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie with the Arizona Cardinals in 2022. The Panthers signed him off the Cardinals’ practice squad on Oct. 18, 2022, and he played in nine games, completely as a special-teamer, for Carolina in 2022.

Wooten started the 2023 season on the Panthers’ practice squad, but he still played in eight games, with 47 defensive snaps and 177 special-teams plays that season.
