Philadelphia’s tailspin returned in the second half on Sunday as the Arizona Cardinals pinned a stunning 35-31 loss on the Eagles.

Trailing 21-6 at halftime, the Cardinals scored touchdowns on all four of their second-half possessions, including a 2-yarder by running back James Conner with 32 seconds to play.

Arizona’s fourth victory of the season dropped the Eagles to 11-5. Philadelphia has dropped four of its past five games and has lost control of the NFC East.

If Dallas defeats the Washington Commanders on the final Sunday of the regular season next week, then the Cowboys will earn the home playoff game that goes to the division’s No. 1 team, and Philadelphia will have to open the postseason on the road as a wild-card team regardless of the Eagles’ outcome against the New York Giants on Jan. 7.

Philadelphia coach Nick Sirianni said he would urge the Eagles to “stick together.”

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts said he and his teammates could do that by “focusing on the things that you can control – purely that. Putting the focus on you doing your job. Challenging yourself, committing yourself to bring the best out of yourself and leaving it at that, trusting in the process of that. …

“We still have everything in front of us to do what we want to do. Still got to clean things up, and there’s still a sense of urgency to do that. In the end, it’s about us having all hands on deck to do so.”

Arizona’s ability to control the clock with its running game limited the chances for Hurts and the Philadelphia offense on Sunday. The Cardinals piled up a 19-minute, 18-second time-of-possession advantage as they ran for 221 yards on 40 carries.

“You look at some of the games we’ve lost,” Hurts said, “… they ran the ball really well and they kind of kept the ball out of our hands, too, so it’s very important for us to take advantage of all our opportunities. We just didn’t do that.”

Philadelphia punted on its first possession of each half and had two scoring series in each half – two touchdowns in the first (along with a 99-yard touchdown interception return by safety Sydney Brown) and one TD and one field goal in the second – before an interception in the end zone on a Hail Mary on the final snap of the game.

Hurts completed 18-of-23 passes for 167 yards with three touchdowns and one interception and ran for 25 yards on eight carries. The former Alabama quarterback connected with former Crimson Tide wide receiver Julio Jones on touchdown throws of 12 yards with 36 seconds left in the first quarter and 22 yards with 16 seconds left in the first half, then had a 9-yard touchdown toss to tight end Dallas Goedert with 9:55 to play.

“Obviously, he played an unbelievable game,” Sirianni said of Hurts. “The ball didn’t touch the ground very often. I don’t know what all his stats were, but the ball didn’t touch the ground. He was in complete control of the game.”

With the score tied 28-28, an unsuccessful onside kick set up Philadelphia at Cardinals 39-yard line. But after reaching the Arizona 20, the Eagles got a holding penalty and did not overcome the setback, settling for a field goal with 2:33 to play.

The Cardinals pounced by going 70 yards in seven plays to take the lead with a touchdown, leaving Hurts to bomb the ball into the end zone from the Eagles 49 on the final play.

“They give us the ball inside the 50, we just have to handle and execute and manage that situation a lot better,” Hurts said.

Sunday’s game marked a return to Philadelphia for Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon. Hurts said Gannon’s experience as the Eagles’ defensive coordinator made a difference for Arizona.

“He sat there in those meetings with us,” Hurts said. “He’s heard kind of what we’re thinking in certain situations. We practiced against him every day for the last two years, so they played a great game. They showed great effort, and they made the plays when they needed to make them.”

The Eagles will complete their regular-season schedule next weekend by visiting the New York Giants (with the complete Week 18 schedule still to be set). New York is the only team that Philadelphia has beaten since Nov. 26. The Eagles defeated the Giants 33-25 on Monday.
