Cardinals claim former UAB standout from NFL waivers
From Saturday through Monday, NFL teams waived 59 players from Alabama high schools and colleges. The other teams in the NFL had until 11 a.m. CDT Wednesday to claim them.

Cornerback Starling Thomas V, who had been trying to earn a spot with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted rookie, is now a member of the Arizona Cardinals’ 53-player regular-season roster.
A prep standout at Ramsay in Birmingham and an All-Conference USA selection for UAB last season, Thomas started each of the Lions’ preseason games and was on the field for 123 defensive snaps and 34 special-teams plays.
Thomas was among the 24 players claimed from the hundreds that were waived during the previous three days. The unclaimed players became unrestricted free agents able to sign with any interested team, except for those waived with injury designations. Those players revert to injured reserve with their teams.
Three players with Alabama football roots are now on IR after being waived with injury designations – Denver Broncos linebacker Christopher Allen (Alabama), New York Giants cornerback Zyon Gilbert (Jeff Davis) and Cleveland Browns wide receiver Anthony Schwartz (Auburn).
The three will not be able to play during the 2023 NFL season unless they are released from IR with an injury settlement. That would free them to sign with another team if they get healthy.
