Car manufacturer recalls over 480,000 vehicles due to engine defects

A manufacturing deficiency has caused Nissan to recall over 480,000 vehicles across the U.S. and Canada.

According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the affected vehicles include the 2019-2024 Nissan Rogue, 2019-2020 Nissan Altima, 2019-2022 Infiniti QX50 and 2022 Infiniti QX55.

All of the vehicles are similar because they all have variable compression turbo (VC-Turbo) engines.

The NHTSA said that the engine bearings for the affected vehicles “may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine failure.”

In the United States, the recall impacts about 443,898 vehicles and, according to the Associated Press, 37,837 were recalled in Canada.

Signs that drivers should be aware of regarding a defect engine bearing include abnormal noise from the engine compartment, rough running, malfunction indicator lights and warning messages in the instrument cluster.

Owners of the vehicles potentially impacted will start getting notified on Aug. 25 to bring their vehicles to a Nissan or Infiniti dealership for inspection.

According to the NHTSA recall document, this will be part of Nissan’s remedy as dealers will inspect vehicles for defects and repair them for free.

“For vehicles with the 3-cylinder 1.5L VC-Turbo engine, if no debris is detected during the inspection, dealers will replace the oil pan gasket, engine oil, and reprogram the engine control module,” the recall report stated.

“For vehicles with the 4-cylinder 2.0L VC-Turbo engine, if no debris is detected, dealers will replace the engine oil. Repairs will be performed free of charge.”
