Capitol One settlement: Important deadline for $707 claims; 98 million could be eligible

An important deadline is nearing to claim part of a settlement related to a cyberattack on Capital One Bank.

The settlement comes after a 2019 cyberattack on Capitol One’s computer systems. The attacker gained unauthorized access to the personal information of some 98 million U.S. customers, according to the website dedicated to the settlement. Compromised information includes people’s names, addresses, ZIP codes, credit scores and limits, balances, payment history and fragments of transaction data from a span of almost 30 days during 2016, 2017 and 2018. Also, about 120,000 Social Security numbers and 80,000 linked bank account numbers were accessed.

Each eligible customer could receive about $707.

The deadline to file an initial claim has passed but those in line for money should have received email notification by Sept. 30, 2022. If you did receive the message, you have until Nov. 27 to respond and select your payment method. If you fail to select the digital payment method by that day, eligible participants will be issued paper checks in two to four weeks.
