Capital murder suspect sought in killing of Carver High baseball player
Authorities are asking for the public’s help in locating a suspect in the fatal shooting of a Birmingham teen last year.
Derrick Michael Stone Jr., 20, is charged with capital murder in the May 16 slaying of 17-year-old Dwaine Thomas. He has been sought for roughly eight months.
He is the second person charged in Thomas’s death. Jemarien Zachius Goree, 18, is also charged with capital murder in Thomas’s car.
Charging documents state Goree provided Stone with the gun to shoot Thomas.
Thomas, a baseball player for the Carver Rams, died in the parking lot of a Tuscaloosa Avenue S.W. apartment complex.
Officers were responding to an unrelated call shortly before 5:30 p.m. that Monday when the officer saw a physical altercation taking place in the parking lot of the complex.
Thomas, police said, “was getting the best of the suspect,’’ during the altercation.
As the officer pulled up, police said, the suspect retrieved a firearm from a vehicle and shot Thomas.
Thomas was found on the ground between two cars and suffering from a gunshot wound and pronounced dead.
The officer also saw the suspect, who tried to flee the scene. He engaged in a brief pursuit with the suspect, who got away after fleeing in a small blue sedan.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said Stone has evaded capture.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
