Candidates to watch as Alabama replaces Nick Saban

The day has finally arrived. Nick Saban is retiring as Alabama’s football coach, according to ESPN.

It’s now time for athletic director Greg Byrne to make a career-defining hire. But how do you replace the man, who is perhaps the greatest of all time?

Whoever gets the job, it will be a difficult act to follow. Here are some names that would make sense for the job.

Current job: Oregon head coach

Brett McMurphy of the Action Network reported that Lanning will be Alabama’s top target to replace Saban. He’s done excellent work at Oregon, leading the Ducks to a PAC-12 championship game appearance this season.

But will he take the job? Oregon is heading to the Big Ten and it’s possible he would opt to stay in what is a very good situation.

Current job: Texas head coach

Sarkisian knows Tuscaloosa. He’s served two stints at Alabama, including as offensive coordinator under Saban.

He and the Longhorns beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa this season. Again though, with Texas joining the SEC, is this a big enough jump to be worth the stress of replacing a legend?

Current job: Ole Miss head coach

Many have theorized that Kiffin has been angling for the Alabama job for years. He revitalized his career when he helped modernize Alabama’s offense as OC after being fired from the USC head coach job.

But Kiffin is known as a loose cannon. Perhaps Alabama knows him too well to trust him with the keys to the kingdom.

Current job: Florida State head coach

Norvell took a Florida State program that was in the mud and made it into a national contender. The Seminoles went undefeated in the regular season and won the ACC championship this season.

FSU got left out of the College Football Playoff in favor of Alabama. Perhaps, if given the choice, Norvell would get out of the ACC that Florida State is also trying to leave.

Current job: Washington head coach

DeBoer’s Washington team just lost the national championship game to Michigan. He built a program that had fallen into disrepair back to prominence.

But, like Lanning, he’s about to get a chance to coach in the Big Ten. Is it possible that he would opt to stay in Seattle, a decidedly less demanding place than Tuscaloosa?
