Can you call a play like Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa?
The Miami Dolphins had more pre-snap penalties than any other AFC team during the 2022 NFL season, and the length of coach Mike McDaniel’s play calls was suggested as a contributing factor.
During his press conference on Wednesday after a joint practice with the Houston Texans, Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said spitting out the play calls in the huddle as they come in from McDaniel can be a “little tough,” and he challenged the assembled media members to repeat a Dolphins’ play call.
“All right, we got ‘north right clamp south fox H top pass 38 top Gumby XP sweat,’” Tagovailoa said. “Let’s go.”
After the reporters gave it a try, the former Alabama All-American quipped: “Sounds like a pre-snap penalty to me.”

McDaniel didn’t shorten the play calls from last season.
“I would say it’s a blessing and a curse because you do want all these indicators because it sort of tells us what the defense is in and what not,” Tagovailoa said of the system. “But then to that point, the clock is going down, and it’s long. I would say the thing is, like for us in the quarterback room, there are some times where you just have to memorize the play, where when it’s coming in, you’re like, ‘OK,’ you’re saying it while he’s, like, not even finished with it.”
The Dolphins and Texans will square off in an NFL preseason game at 3 p.m. CDT Saturday at NRG Stadium in Houston.
