Cam Sims leaving Commanders after five NFL seasons

Tight end O.J. Howard and wide receiver Cam Sims played as teammates at Alabama for three seasons. Now in the NFL, the pass-catchers will be teammates again.

The Las Vegas Raiders announced on Monday that they had signed Howard as an unrestricted free agent. On Monday night, the Washington Post and The Athletic reported Sims had agreed to terms with Las Vegas to join the Raiders in free agency, too.

Sims made Washington’s regular-season roster as an undrafted rookie in 2018, and he had spent his entire NFL career with the Commanders.

In 2022, Sims caught eight passes for 89 yards on 328 offensive snaps. He also was on the field for 244 special-teams plays.

Sims will be the third wide receiver signed by Las Vegas this offseason, after Jakobi Meyers from the New England Patriots and Phillip Dorsett from the Houston Texans.

The Raiders lost wide receiver Mack Hollins in free agency to the Atlanta Falcons. But Las Vegas has All-Pro Davante Adams and Hunter Renfrow returning at the position for 2023.

In 55 NFL regular-season games, Sims has 57 receptions for 804 yards and three touchdowns. In his only playoff appearance, Sims had seven receptions for 104 yards in Washington’s 31-23 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Jan. 9, 2021.

At Alabama, Sims had 41 receptions for 467 yards and two touchdowns in four seasons.

Sims led Washington’s wide receivers with five catches for 131 yards in the 2018 preseason to make the team. But blocking on a kickoff return in the opening seconds of the first game of the season, Sims suffered a high ankle sprain and missed the rest of the campaign.

In 2019, Sims didn’t make the active roster coming out of the preseason. After a stint on Washington’s practice squad, he played in seven games. Sims had two receptions for 27 yards.

In 2020, Washington again released Sims at the end of training camp and re-signed him for the practice squad. But he played in every game and recorded 32 receptions for 477 yards and one touchdown.

Washington had kept Sims out of free agency in the past two offseasons with a one-year, $2.133 million contract in 2021, when he had 15 receptions for 211 yards and two touchdowns, and a one-year, $2.59 million contract in 2022.
