Cam Sims, former Alabama offensive coordinator reunite

When Alabama won the CFP national championship for the 2017 season, Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Brian Daboll worked with a unit that featured six wide receivers who have gone on to catch passes in the NFL.

On Monday, Daboll reunited with one of those pass-catchers when the New York Giants signed Cam Sims for their practice squad.

Daboll is preparing for his second season as the Giants’ head coach. Sims was released last week when Las Vegas Raiders reduced their preseason roster to the 53-player regular-season limit.

Sims had 14 receptions for 207 yards and one touchdown for Alabama in 2017, which tied him with Robert Foster and Jerry Jeudy for second on the team behind Calvin Ridley’s 63 receptions. The Tide’s other two future NFL wide receivers that season were Henry Ruggs III and DeVonta Smith.

Sims made Washington’s regular-season roster as an undrafted rookie in 2018, but he sustained a season-ending injury on the opening kickoff of the first game. He came back to catch 57 passes for 804 yards and three touchdowns in 54 games over the next four seasons before signing with the Raiders as a free agent in March.

The Giants signed Sims after putting wide receiver Cole Beasley on the practice squad/injured list. New York will kick off its 2023 season on Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys.

Two other players with Alabama football roots joined NFL practice squads on Monday in time for Week 1 practices:

· Cornerback Tae Hayes (Decatur) joined the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad. Preparing for his fifth NFL season, Hayes had been released by the Ravens last week.

· Linebacker Nicholas Morrow (Huntsville) joined the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad. Morrow made 116 tackles for the Chicago Bears in his sixth NFL season in 2022. But he had been released by the Eagles last week after signing with Philadelphia as a free agent during the offseason.
