Cam Newton on Jalen Hurts: ‘Break all them (expletive)’

When Jalen Hurts scored his 15th touchdown of the season during the Philadelphia Eagles’ 33-25 victory over the New York Giants on Monday, the former Alabama standout broke the NFL single-season record for TD runs by a quarterback.

Hurts’ touchdown on Monday came the way 10 of the previous 14 had, with the quarterback burrowing in behind the offensive line while being pushed by two backs for a 1-yard score. The play has been dubbed the Tush Push and the Brotherly Shove.

But some football fans and commentators seem to think Hurts’ record deserves an asterisk. Hurts broke the single-season record of 14 rushing touchdowns set by Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton in 2011, and memories of the former Auburn All-American flipping over the goal line against the Houston Texans apparently are deemed more record-worthy than Hurts’ Brotherly Shove scores.

Newton is not among those naysayers.

“Jalen is definitely a product of a situation that is favorable to his strengths, similar to what I was, too,” Newton said this week. “… When I see Jalen Hurts doing it, it doesn’t make me bitter. (Expletive), records are documented to be broken.”

Of Newton’s 14 touchdowns in 2011, six were 1-yard scores. The Carolina QB also scored on runs of 2, 4, 6, 11, 14 (twice), 16 and 49 yards.

In addition to his 11 1-yard touchdowns, Hurts also has scored on runs of 3 (twice), 10 and 12 yards this season.

Hurts was scoring touchdowns before the advent of the Brotherly Shove. He ran 7 yards for his first touchdown in his second NFL start against the Arizona Cardinals on Dec. 20, 2020.

With 41 rushing touchdowns, Hurts ranks fifth among quarterbacks in NFL history, even though Monday’s game was his 49th career start.

Newton holds the QB career record with 75 rushing touchdowns. Current Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has 51, Otto Graham had 44 and Steve Young 43. Allen has 13 rushing touchdowns this season.

Of the 10 quarterbacks who have run for at least 10 touchdowns in a single season, Newton and Hurts are the only ones who have done so more than once. In addition to 14 TD runs in 2011, Newton had 10 in 2015 and 12 in 2020. Hurts had 10 in 2021 and 13 in 2022.

“When I see Jalen Hurts doing what he’s supposed to do, what I’m going to say?” Newton said. “‘Oh, he have a lot help.’ Hell, naw. Break all them (expletive). That’s what they’re there for. But while you’re breaking records, you’re still going to keep me relevant because he has X amount more touchdowns to catch Cam Newton. Hell, I hope that (expletive) does happen.”

Hurts and the Eagles return to action on Sunday when they take on the Cardinals at noon CST at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia for the next-to-last game on the regular-season schedule.

At 11-4, the Eagles have qualified for the NFC playoffs. A victory on Sunday would secure the NFC East title and an accompanying first-round home game in the postseason for Philadelphia.

The Eagles remain in the running for the conference’s No. 1 seed, which comes with a first-round bye and homefield advantage throughout the NFC playoffs. The Detroit Lions and the San Francisco 49ers also have 11-4 records, and the 49ers defeated Philadelphia 42-19 on Dec. 3.
