Calvin Ridley sees some Julio Jones in Tennessee teammate
Tennessee Titans invested in improving their wide-receiver corps for second-year quarterback Will Levis by signing Calvin Ridley and Tyler Boyd in free agency this offseason.
They joined DeAndre Hopkins, who had 1,057 receiving yards in 2023, his first season with the Titans.
But before Tennessee had Hopkins, Ridley or Boyd, it had Treylon Burks, the 18th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
In his two NFL seasons, Burks has 49 receptions for 665 yards and one touchdown in 22 games.
But Ridley said Burks shouldn’t be discounted by the Titans’ talent influx. Ridley said Burks reminded him of Julio Jones, A.J. Brown and Terrell Owens. Like Ridley a former Alabama standout, Jones, a seven-time Pro Bowler, was Ridley’s mentor in his first three seasons with the Atlanta Falcons. Brown has been a Pro Bowler the past two seasons for the Philadelphia Eagles. Owens is a Pro Football Hall of Fame member from Alexander City.
“This dude is a freak,” Ridley said of Burks. “Like seriously, bro, he’s going to be a stud. There’s no worries in him. What I see, he’s like Julio, A.J. Brown, he’s like T.O. A dude that big, that fast, I mean, he’s a stud, man. You ain’t got to worry about him. He’s just got to learn, slow the game down. He’ll be all right.”
For Ridley, Burks is part of a deep and talented position group for Tennessee.
“Once I’m out here running with these guys, sweating, tired with them, throwing up some days – I don’t care, I shouldn’t say all this – but I don’t be caring who the other team got,” Ridley said. “We’re the best, and we’re working together, so I should think that we’re going to be good.”
The Titans signed Ridley to a four-year, $92 million contract in March after he had 76 receptions for 1,016 yards and eight touchdowns for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2023.
“Everything that we thought he would be,” Tennessee coach Brian Callahan said this week when asked what he’d seen from Ridley during the Titans’ offseason program. “It’s exciting when you sign a guy in free agency, and you hope but you don’t always know. You go by what you hear and what you see. It’s always good when the guy gets in the building and you see he’s everything you would expect him to be.
“He’s a great pro. He’s a phenomenal person to be around. He’s incredibly talented. You see his speed and his burst when you watch him on the field. I think he’s really going to help us. He’s a pro’s pro. He prepares. He works hard. He loves playing football. And those are the things you hope for when you sign free agents. He’s lived up to every one of those things for us so far. A lot of work to go, but I’ve been really, really happy with him.”
Tennessee has mandatory minicamp on Tuesday through Thursday, then concludes its offseason program with practices on June 10 through June 13 before breaking until training camp.
“Looks like we’re going to be throwing it pretty good,” Ridley said. “I love to get the ball. Love the way they’re using me so far, moving around pretty good. …
“I feel like we’re jelling pretty good this far in, so it’s only going to get better as we continue to work and get it all the way down pat.”
