Calvin Ridley on 0-catch game: ‘(Expletive) getting (expletive) crazy for me’

When asked after Tennessee’s 20-17 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday about finishing with no receptions, Titans wide receiver Calvin Ridley had a question of his own for the reporters gathered at his locker.

“In what part of the game did I have targets?” Ridley asked.

When told the fourth quarter, Ridley said: “All right then, cool. (Expletive), I need some in the beginning of the (expletive) game, too, then. And (expletive) getting (expletive) crazy for me.

“It is what it is. I sucked today and got to be better. But I got to get the ball a little earlier in the game, so I can be in the game and here with the team so I can play well also.”

Tennessee signed the former Alabama standout to a four-year, $92 million contract in March in NFL free agency. But in the Titans’ past three games, Ridley has two receptions for 14 yards.

“It’s frustrating,” Ridley said after Sunday’s game. “The last couple weeks’ve been frustrating. Got to get better.”

In Tennessee’s 30-14 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 22 and 31-12 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 30, the football was thrown Ridley’s way three times in each game.

“We need to use his speed and explosiveness more,” Titans coach Brian Callahan said on Wednesday. “Just get it in his hands every which way we can. And that’s on me to get him in those spots where he can get the ball more. We need to find a way to get him going.”

Tennessee quarterback Will Levis targeted Ridley eight times against Indianapolis. Lewis threw to Ridley for the first time on Sunday on the opening snap of the second quarter. Ridley got another target with 11:19 left in first half, then again on the third snap of the second half.

Ridley’s other five targets came in the final 7:27 of the game, and one was intercepted by Colts safety Julian Blackmon at the Indianapolis 37-yard line with 4:52 to play and the Titans trailing by three points.

Ridley did have a 9-yard run from scrimmage on Sunday.

“It’s been a little weird,” Ridley said. “Got to figure it out.”

Levis finished the game completing 16-of-27 passes for 95 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Since 1992, when pass targets began being tracked, Ridley is the 13th player with at least eight targets and zero catches in the same NFL game. There’s been one other instance since the 2015 season.

Ridley had at least one reception in each of past 37 games, and Sunday’s contest was the third of his career without a catch. The most recent came on Oct. 5, 2020, and the other zero-reception game was his NFL debut on Sept. 6, 2018.

The Titans play the Buffalo Bills at noon CDT Sunday at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York, in their next game.
