Calvin Ridley’s comeback season included a return to 1,000-yard receiver status and a disappointing ending.

The former Alabama wide receiver missed the 2022 season serving an NFL-imposed suspension.

On the final day of the 2023 regular season, Ridley had six receptions for 106 yards and one touchdown as the Jacksonville Jaguars lost the Tennessee Titans 28-20.

The Jaguars lost even though Ridley caught a 69-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Trevor Lawrence. If Jacksonville had won the game, it would have taken the AFC South title and hosted a first-round game in the NFL playoffs next week. But the loss pushed the Jaguars out of the playoff picture.

Sunday’s production boosted Ridley’s final tally for the 2023 campaign to 76 receptions for 1,016 yards and eight touchdowns.

In Ridley’s four seasons with Atlanta, the Falcons did not advance to the playoffs either. But Ridley did have a 1,000-yard season in 2020, when he had 90 receptions for 1,374 yards and nine touchdowns.

Ridley had played only five games in 2021 when he left the Falcons to focus on his “mental wellbeing.”

The NFL has said it was during this period away from the Falcons that he bet on league games. For that, the NFL suspended him indefinitely on March 7, 2022, which turned out to be for the 2022 season after he was reinstated on March 6, 2023.

While Ridley was suspended, the Falcons traded him to the Jaguars on Nov. 1, 2022.

Ridley became the fourth former Alabama wide receiver to reach 1,000 receiving yards in 2023, joining the Cleveland Browns’ Amari Cooper, Philadelphia Eagles’ DeVonta Smith and Miami Dolphins’ Jaylen Waddle.

There have been 24 1,000-yard receiving seasons in the NFL produced by seven Alabama alumni.
