California man arrested in Hoover burglary attempt accused in others around nation
A California man is charged in a 2021 burglary attempt after authorities say he tried to break into a Hoover home using a crowbar to shatter the window.
Hoover police on Monday announced Diego Hernan Reyes Bahamondes, 35, is charged with second-degree burglary. Lt. Daniel Lowe said Bahamondes is suspected in numerous property crimes nationwide.
The Alabama break-in attempt happened on Feb. 7, 2021, in Greystone. The homeowner heard the intruder trying to gain entry by breaking the window and quickly called police.
The suspect fled the scene. Lowe said detectives with the Crimes Against Property and Crime Scene Investigation units began a lengthy investigation that ultimately led to the identification of Bahamondes as a suspect.
Detectives began networking with investigators in other regions and determined the same group of suspects, believed to be Chilean nationals, were likely responsible for similar residential burglaries throughout the United States, Lowe said.
The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences confirmed that physical evidence recovered from the scene of the Greystone burglary was forensically linked Bahamondes.
Bahamondes is currently being held in the Davidson County Jail in Tennessee on charges of aggravated burglary, which is a felony.
Bahamondes faces extradition to California in similar cases. Lowe said it is unknown when he will be extradited to Alabama on this charge, but once back in the state, his bond will be set at $20,000.
